Gainwell Engineering gets the first global order for GHWM300M Highwall Mining unit from Vitrinite
New South Wales, Australia, March 11, 2022 : Gainwell Engineering Global Pte Ltd (Gainwell Engineering) has entered into a contract with Vitrinite to supply a highwall miner to support the Vulcan Mine in Queensland’s Bowen Basin. This marks the first global order for Gainwell Engineering. The company had launched its operations earlier this year by entering into a technology licensing agreement for underground mining equipment with Caterpillar, world's leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines and diesel-electric locomotives.
The introduction of highwall mining technology will play a significant role in the future of the Australian mining industry, as it has in many other coal markets around the world. Highwall miners have proven to be safe, highly productive, have a low environmental impact, and provide access to coal that would otherwise be stranded due to economic constraints.

A feasibility study was conducted over a two-year period by Vitrinite to determine the best method to maximize the value of its extensive resources at Vulcan. The purchase is the culmination of extensive reviews of operating highwall miners around the world. Highwall miners manufactured by Gainwell Engineering meet global standards and have been determined to be the best suited for the mining conditions at Vulcan.
Vitrinite anticipates the first coal to be mined with the highwall unit in 2023 and is likely to deploy multiple units in quick succession to increase production.
